On Sunday, 29th June 2008, the Sea Stallion will set off on its final journey from Dublin to Roskilde! Since arriving in Dublin in August, the Sea Stallion has resided in the National Museum at Collins Barracks, but she will again sail down the Liffey and across the North Sea to her home in Roskilde.

When the Sea Stallion first arrived in the Docklands, spectators came out in their thousands to see the magnificent Viking warship as she sailed up the River Liffey to Custom House Quay and was then hoisted from the river and transported to the National Museum. Her 65-member crew was given a warm welcome of ringing cathedrals bells after battling the North Sea.

The Sea Stallion is a magnificent reconstruction of a thirty-metre-long Viking warship built as culmination of Danish marine project, "Thoroughbred of the Sea". The reconstruction of this Viking ship was the most ambitious ship archeology research project ever undertaken. The original ship was built in Dublin in 1042 and ended its day at the bottom of Roskilde Fjord at the end of the 11th century. The current Sea Stallion was built at the Viking Ship Museum boat yard using the methods, materials and tools of the Viking Age. She was then tested on the water to judge her seaworthiness and speed in the same waters sailed by the original ship hundreds of years ago. This research project has provided valuable new information on Viking longships and society.

There is no doubt that Dubliners will turn out in their masses to bid a fond farewell to the ship and her crew, so why not join us . . .  The final farewell will take place at Custom House Quay, Docklands on Sunday 29th June. Come and be a part of history! We will start the festivities with a street party from 9am with traditional Irish music, gospel choir, and jazz.

Docklands will give the Sea Stallion a send-off worthy of this magnificent ship and her modern Viking crew.

The Sea Stallion will also be on view on Saturday 28th at its berth at Sean O'Casey Bridge but will sail from Custom House Quay at 12:00pm on Sunday, 29 June, 2008 . . . so don't miss out!

Check back soon for more information on how you can attend the street party!
